Antique, fine quality mid 19th C club size chess set in ebony and boxwood, the king standing at a goodly 106mm (4.25). The set is in very good condition with the exception of a small amount of remedial work needed as detailed in the condition report. The set with a mahogany box of the period. The chess pieces are very finely turned, with graduated collars on the pawns as well as the major pieces, and a footrim which is very reminiscent of Jaques sets of the period. One unusual feature is the shape of the king’s head – not one of the usual variants one comes across – it has a Calvert look to it but the set is almost not Calvert as the knights do not fit the pattern and invariably Calvert wooden sets were unpolished. The rooks of the set have 6 crenellations (like Jaques) and the tower walls have horizontal parallel lines around them similar to illustration for Jaques’ “English Pattern Chessmen” shown at fig. 55 in Alan Farhst’s “Jaques and British Chess Company Chess Sets”. The set is unmarked, but undoubtedly by one of the better makers. The set has good colour and of a very good weight and the pieces feel good in the hand. The set has been felted by a previous owner, but this was not a common practice with playing sets of this type in the 19th century. Overall a lovely and genuine period set of good size, for play and/or display. Should you need further photos or further information I will be happy to provide.
